Gather and label everything

For cine film, rare formats, or a large pile, a specialist service is worth every penny. For a handful of VHS tapes, a cheap USB capture device and an afternoon will do the job.
Capture at the best quality
Ask for, or save, MP4 files at the highest quality on offer. Avoid anything that only gives you a DVD, which just locks the footage away again in another dying format.
Enhance, then back up
Old footage can be cleaned up and sharpened with software. Whatever you do, keep the raw digital files, name them clearly, and back them up in more than one place.
Do not throw the tapes away once digitised. Keep them as your originals, in case you ever want a better transfer as the technology improves.
